Ron Paul. Really?

I’ve recently learned that a friend of mine has some sort of leanings toward Ron Paul.

That’s crazy.

To all you misguided Paul supporters who can get past

—(1) the lifting of a ban on assault weapons (I can see that. Maybe. We do need the ability to protect ourselves with superpowerful machine guns, right?)

—(2) eliminating taxes (well, sure, it sucks to pay taxes, but where is the money going to come from to build roads? infrastructure? Oh, right, from the corporations. But let’s go down the Paulian road of conspiracy theories, because I thought corporations sucked too. I mean, isn’t that why we went to Iraq? Not Bush. Not neocons of their own right. Wasn’t it the oil and energy corporations? The Military-Industrial complex? They are going to build our roads and finance our schools? Perfect. Perfect fucking answer. They are going to have to, if the government is stripped of all tax-levying power. And if you want me to keep it state and local, not federal, well, hell, don’t get me started on the glories of local politics and how great all of our states are doing.)

—(3) no environmental standards… (wtf?)

please take a look at his newsletters. See the TNR article here:

What they reveal are decades worth of obsession with conspiracies, sympathy for the right-wing militia movement, and deeply held bigotry against blacks, Jews, and gays. In short, they suggest that Ron Paul is not the plain-speaking antiwar activist his supporters believe they are backing—but rather a member in good standing of some of the oldest and ugliest traditions in American politics.
